Steps to Get Your Texas CDL Permit (CLP)

Follow these steps in order. Texas DPS requirements can change — always verify with Texas DPS directly before your visit.

  1. 1
    Eligibility

Confirm you meet Texas CDL requirements

You must be at least 18 years old for intrastate (within Texas) or 21 for interstate CDL driving. You must be a Texas resident with a valid Texas driver's license. Check your driving record — certain violations can disqualify you.

  2. 2
    Medical

    Get a DOT medical exam

Visit a DOT-certified medical examiner and pass a physical exam. You will receive a Medical Examiner Certificate (MEC / Form MCSA-5876). The examiner should upload your results to the FMCSA National Registry. Bring the certificate to the DPS when you apply for your CLP.

  3. 3
    Study

Study the Texas CDL Handbook and practice tests

Download the Texas CDL Handbook (DL-7C). Study the General Knowledge section plus any additional sections for your CDL class (Class A or B) and endorsements. Take practice CDL knowledge tests online to prepare.

  4. 4
    ELDT

    Complete ELDT theory (if required)

Most first-time CDL applicants and those upgrading their license class must complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) theory through an approved provider listed in the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (TPR). ELDT must be completed before you take the CDL knowledge tests at DPS. Check FMCSA TPR to find approved online providers.

  5. 5
    DPS Visit

Visit Texas DPS and take the CDL knowledge tests

Bring your current Texas driver's license, DOT medical certificate, any applicable ELDT completion records, and payment for permit fees. Pass the required CDL written/knowledge tests for your class (General Knowledge, Combination Vehicles for Class A, Air Brakes if applicable, etc.). DPS will issue your Commercial Learner Permit (CLP).

  6. 6
    Wait Period

Hold your CLP for at least 14 days

Texas law requires that you hold your CLP for a minimum of 14 days before you may take the CDL skills test. Use this time to start planning your test date, practice range time, and contact FastPass CDL to schedule your prep week.

  7. 7
    Schedule

Schedule your CDL skills test at Wichita Falls DPS

Schedule your CDL skills test at a Texas DPS office. The Wichita Falls DPS office may have earlier appointment availability than DFW-area offices. You are not required to test at the office nearest your home. Learn more about testing in Wichita Falls →
