The main difference is the type of vehicle:
- Class A CDL: Required to operate any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001+ lbs when the towed vehicle weighs more than 10,000 lbs. Typical example: tractor-trailer.
- Class B CDL: Required to operate a single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001+ lbs, or towing a vehicle not over 10,000 lbs. Typical examples: straight box trucks, dump trucks, buses, and some specialty vehicles.
